Li's Anime Boston 2003 Con Report

Day One

i'm working with my comic store in the dealers room of the con, so i'm not reallly able to go around very much to the events.

there are some really nice costumes, some not so nice costumes, and a bunch of people not dressed up at all (and since unfortuantely my costume is in another state, i fall into the last category.)

it's definately a LOT smaller than Otakon. it's in the park hotel, which is really not well designed or laid out, and it's really hard to find your way around the con.

we set up thursday night, which was a hassle. i had class thursday morning, went straight to work after that, then a brief meal break then went to the comic store to help load the van. and it was FREEZING thursday night. it was totally hell.

there are 3 of us girls helping out the comic store owner. we're all young and rather attractive. i'm wondering if he choose us delibrately for this fact ^.~

so yesterday was a VERY LONG day. today, we had to get there by 7:30, to do the final set up. (we're a comic store. we have a TON of manga books to organize) so i worked all day today. around 7 we finished up, so i got to hit some of the events.

first up was the "Who's Line is it Anime?" that was a lot of fun. they had 4 american dub VA's as the contestants. they were really good actors (in this regard at least) and were (for the most part) quite funny. what i was disappointed with, was that while they played the game well overall, they didn't use a lot of anime in it.

then, i watched half of the AMV contest. some pretty good videos.

i cut out of there early to go to a "Got Yaoi?" panel. what can i say? i just love two hot bishie guys angsting over life and each other. it wasn't much of a panel persay, though it was entertaining discusion.

Day Two

so, saturday went well. after the dealers room closed, i rushed off to the mascarade. which started half an hour late. grrrr.

so the judges came out, dressed in Sakura Taisen garb. they did a song and dance, then talked a bit about the Sakura Taisen phenomenom in Japan. they asked us in the audiance if anyone knew of the Sakura Taisen musicals. well, in undergrad, the president of my anime club, and a good friend of mine, was absolutely OBSESSED with Sakura Taisen, so naturally i knew of the musicals.

well, i was aparantely the only one who did. so they invited me up on stage. ^.^;;

then, since they still needed to stall for time, they decided to sing the opening theme to Sakura Taisen. just because i know of the musicals, and i'm familiar with the music, does NOT mean i know the lyrics!

so i sang along as best i could. my knees were shaking so hard!

so, then the show finally got on its way. it was really frustrating that the MC apparantly knew nothing at all about anime, because he kept misprounancing everything! it was really bad.

my next moment of fame in the show came a little latter. one of the skits started with the scene from the End of Eva. the beginning scene. YOU know which one i mean. so, as Shinji turned his back to the audiance, the narrator said "Shinji felt shock on seeing Asuka's comotose body." there were a lot of reaction from the audiance. i scream out in responce "that's NOT the feeling that he's feeling!" when i started my shout, there was a lot of noice from the audiance, but by the end, everyone else had quieted down, so EVERYONE could here my call. i was in the very back of the room, but they could here me up on stage! the narrator responded back that they needed to keep it "pc." it was great.

Day Three

sunday was much quieter. Akiko and i posted 5 pics in the art show. someone who has visited AAF recognized Akiko's pic, but did not recognize my name with the pic. ^.^;; the convention staff wanted us to use our real names. my pic got one bid, but Akiko's got three so it got auctioned. very cool.

i got my picture taken 5 times this weekend, even though i wasn't in costume! it was a lot of fun.

the guy in the booth next to mine was this REALLY HOT asian guy. *drool* he was SO HOT.

i got to meet lots of fun people, and lots of yaoi fans, so we all talked about how much we loved angsty bishie guys together.

sunday night didn't end well though. a new girl came in to help us back things up, and she had this major attitude! after 4 long days, i couldnt' deal with her bitchiness.

so, it was fun, it was too long, and but i got lots of money, and spent lots of money. so it's all good.
